Figures given in Table 4.3 are mean averages (with standard deviations in brackets underneath) of Differential Emotional Scale (DES; Izard, 1977) results from 99 participants, all students from Ateneo de Davao University (average age 19). They were randomly assigned to watch either bulletin as they were played simultaneously in adjacent rooms. Each group contained a balance of male and female, with 33 women in both, 17 men in the WJ group and 16 men watching PJ. No participant saw both versions or was at any stage made aware that a different version existed.

The DES suggests a slightly higher increase in anger for war watchers after the NPA landmine story compared with the baseline measures. The levels of happiness, delight and amazement reported by the WJ group dropped more, compared with baseline, than those of the PJ group.
